We're Wired: Mondavi Video, Subscription Sales Online!
This just in: The Mondavi Center has stepped into the 21st century! In our new season, for the first time, subscriptions are available for purchase online! Límon and Local
The Limón Dance Company, one of the great American modern dance troupes, will perform at the Mondavi Center April 11-12 in events that will include a group of specially trained local dancers. In a project spanning several months, members of the Limón company have auditioned and prepared the locals to participate in a performance of Missa Brevis,one of choreographer Jose Limón’s greatest works. The performances, which promise to be highlights of the Mondavi Center’s dance season, will also include Recordare by acclaimed American choreographer Lar Lubovitch. Read the article here.
Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake and Mira Nair
Mira Nair’s latest film, The Namesake, has been earning critical raves and big box office. This month, you can hear her speak at the Mondavi Center and attend local showings of her films! Nair’s Mondavi Center lecture, a presentation entitled Between Two Worlds: An Evening with Mira Nair, will take place May 21. Her recent film, The Namesake, is currently showing at the Davis Varsity. The Varsity will also be showing Nair’s Monsoon Wedding on May 21 at 5:30 pm, featuring a special appearance by Nair, who will give a 5-10 minute introduction to the film. Read the article here.
Concubines, Kings, and Contemporary Legends
One of the best-known works of classical Beijing opera and a stunning one-man opera version of one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays will come to UC Davis next month as Contemporary Legend Theatre of Taiwan presents Farewell My Concubine and King Lear at the Mondavi Center. Both productions set familiar epic stories within the exotic context of Chinese opera, with its unique singing, movement, costumes, and martial arts, with music performed by a live orchestra.
