In 2011, Jules Feiffer’s beloved cartoon character, the modern Dancer, was brought to life in a collection of very short films directed by Judy Dennis: A Dance to Spring, A Dance to Art, A Dance to Summer, A Dance to the Loss of Innocence, A Dance to the New Year and A Dance to the End of Summer. The Mondavi Center is proud to host the West Coast debut of the films, a pair of which will also be screened before each Studio Dance performance. For this special live family-friendly event, the creative forces behind the films, including director Judy Dennis and producer Ellen Dennis, will bring the Dancer to vivid life onstage in Jackson Hall. Feiffer will create new Dancer cartoons, with Andrea Weber (Merce Cunningham Dance Company) choreographing and composer/saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom making music in the moment to interpret Feiffer’s drawings. Audience members will have the chance to join the Dancer event on stage. Just as the Dancer is an icon of optimism and earnestness, so will these
live moments of creativity celebrate the creative spirit and inspire a new
generation with the bracing, topical and rapturous world of Feiffer. |
