String Quartet No.15 in E-flat minor , Op.144 Sonata for Viola & Piano in C major, Op. 147 Mondavi Center is proud to present the third and final year of a series of lecture/performance exploring the quartets of Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-75), considered the greatest composer of the former Soviet Union. His 15 string quartets, written between 1938 and 1975, are now among the acknowledged masterpieces of twentieth-century music, thanks to their accessible musical language and powerful emotional appeal. Shostakovich's qusrtets are an opaque, frequently encoded, almost autobiographical outpouring of the public and private agony endured by the creative artist under totalitarianism. Each performance by the renowned Alexander String Quartet will be introduced by Robert Greenberg, a dynamic teacher and composer who has lectured on musical topics throughout North America and Europe, and is a regular music contributor to NPR's Weekend All Things Considered. On April 3, the quartet will be joined by acclaimed UC Davis pianist Lara Downes |
