Mondavi Center resident pianist Lara Downes introduces Long Time Coming, a new multimedia concert work inspired by Duke Ellington’s iconic 1943 work New World A Comin’. Featuring music from that suite and the world premiere of an original work for piano, live spoken word artist, and jazz ensemble by composer David Sanford, Long Time Coming reflects on the power of hope in troubled times, the impact of music on the collective consciousness, and the interrelationship of American music to the progression of civil rights.
