Biography

Russian National Orchestra

The Russian National Orchestra has been in demand throughout the music world since its 1990 Moscow premiere. Of the orchestra’s 1996 debut at the BBC Proms in London, the Evening Standard wrote, “They played with such captivating beauty that the audience gave an involuntary sigh of pleasure.” In 2004, the orchestra was described as “a living symbol of the best in Russian art” (Miami Herald) and “as close to perfect as one could hope for” (Trinity Mirror).

The first Russian orchestra to perform at the Vatican and in Israel, the RNO maintains an active international tour schedule, appearing regularly in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The orchestra is a frequent guest at major festivals, and since 1999 has performed an annual concert series in the U.S. Popular with radio audiences worldwide, RNO concerts are frequently aired by National Public Radio in the United States and the European Broadcasting Union.

In 2005, festivities marking the RNO 15th Anniversary were held in London, St. Petersburg, and Moscow, and in March 2006, a gala celebration will take place in New York in connection with the anniversary and the debut of Vladimir Jurowski as newly appointed RNO Principal Guest Conductor. Also in March 2006, the RNO will embark on a coast-to-coast United States tour which commences in New York with Vladimir Jurowski leading three concerts in the first-ever RNO Lincoln Center Residency.

Gramophone magazine called the first RNO CD (1991) “an awe-inspiring experience; should human beings be able to play like this?” and listed it as the best recording of Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique in history. Since then, the orchestra has made more than 30 recordings for Deutsche Grammophon and PentaTone Classics, with conductors that include RNO founder and Artistic Director Mikhail Pletnev, Mstislav Rostropovich, Kent Nagano, and Alexander Vedernikov.

The orchestra signed a multi-disc agreement with PentaTone Classics in 2003. One of the first results of this collaboration—a recording of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and Beintus’ Wolf Tracks, conducted by Kent Nagano—was the winner of a 2004 Grammy Award, making the RNO the first Russian orchestra to win the recording industry’s highest honor.

Unique among the principal Russian ensembles, the RNO is independent of the government and has developed its own path-breaking structure. Artistic policy is shaped and guided by the RNO Conductor Collegium, a group of internationally renowned conductors who share the podium leadership. The Collegium is led by Mikhail Pletnev and, in addition to Nagano and Vedernikov, includes Vladimir Jurowski, Paavo Berglund, and Christian Gansch. Another RNO innovation is Cultural Allies, created in 2001. The ongoing program encompasses exchanges between artists in Russia and the west, and the commissioning of new works.

The Russian National Orchestra is supported by private funding and governed by a distinguished multinational board of trustees. Affiliated organizations include the Russian National Orchestra Trust (U.K.), Russian Arts Foundation, and American Council of the RNO.

For more information please visit www.rno.ru.

Russian National Orchestra

Conductors Collegium
Mikhail Pletnev, Founder and Artistic Director
Vladimir Jurowski, Principal Guest Conductor
Kent Nagano
Paavo Berglund
Christian Gansch
Alexander Vedernikov

Associate Conductors
Dmitri Liss
Carlo Ponti, Jr.
Alexander Sladkovsky

Violin I
Alexey Bruni
Tatiana Porshneva
Natalia Anurova
Yana Gerasimova
Vasily Vyrenkov
Edvard Yatsun
Vadim Teifikov
Timur Pirverdiev
Maxim Khokholkov
Fedor Shevrekuko
Igor Akimov
Maxim Avramenko
Anatoli Fedorenko
Natalia Fokina
Olga Chepizhnaya
Dmitri Kozerukov

Violin II
Sergey Starcheus
Evgeny Feofanov
Pavel Gorbenko
Nikolay Sharov
Andrey Provatorov
Ekaterina Tsareva
Alexey Sobolev
Vladimir Teslya
Sergey Shakin
Irina Simonenko
Evgeny Durnovo
Sergey Korolev
Dmitry Avramenko
Svetlana Dzutseva

Viola
Sergey Dubov
Alexander Akimov
Sergey Bogdanov
Maria Goryunova
Sofia Lebed
Andrey Serdukovsky
Olga Suslova
Anton Yaroshenko
Alexander Zhulev
Kseniya Zhuleva
Alexander Bobrovsky
Grigoriy Chekmarev

Cello
Alexander Gotgelf
Alexander Goryunov
Olesya Gavrikova
Alexander Grashenkov
Sergey Kazantsev
Valery Verstyuk
Maxim Tarnorutsky
Kirill Variash
Svetlana Vladimirova
Dmitry Shameev

Bass
Rustem Gabdullin
Gennady Krutikov
Sergey Kornienko
Grigori Krotenko
Leonid Bakuline
Vasiliy Beschastnov
Miroslav Maksimyuk
Anton Vinogradov

Flute
Maxim Rubtsov
Sergei Igrunov
Nikolay Lotakov

Oboe
Olga Tomilova
Andrey Rubtsov
Vitaly Nazarov
Maxim Orekhov

Clarinet
Nikolai Mozgovenko
Alexey Bogorad
Sergey Bolshakov
Dmitry Belik
Bassoon
Alexey Sizov
Vladimir Markin
Andrey Shamidanov
Elizaveta Vilkovyskaya

Horn
Igor Makarov
Alexey Serov
Victor Bushuev
Vladimir Slabtchouk
Vladimir Toutchkov
Askar Bissembin

Trumpet
Vladislav Lavrik
Andrey Kolokolov
Georgy Pleskach
Leonid Korkin

Trombone
Dmitry Zorkin
Dmitry Zheleznov
Arkady Starkov
Vyatcheslav Patchkaev
Dmitry Anakovsky

Harp
Svetlana Paramonova
Lyudmila Vartanyan

Percussion
Dmitry Loukianov
Alexander Suvorov
Ilia Melikhov
Leonid Lysenko
Kirill Loukianenko
Vladimir Kalabanov

Piano
Leonid Ogrintchouk

Russian National Orchestra Administration

Sergei Markov, Chief Executive
Elina Frolkova, Artistic Administrator
Alexandra Smirnovam, Tours and Projects
Valentin Teslia, Librarian
Amir Iliyasov, Logistic Manager
Alexey Dragoun, Stage Crew
Oleg Litvinov, Stage Crew
Vyacheslav Podshibyakin, Stage Crew

Richard Walker, General Counsel
