David Grisman Quintet

With Old School Freight Train
David Grisman Quintet
Friday, October 27, 2006 - 8:00pm
Two generations of bluegrass performers join forces in this incredible concert. The opening act is acoustic wonder-band Old School Freight Train, a Virginia band known for smart lyrics, virtuosic playing, and a style blending bluegrass with jazz, Latin, and Celtic sounds.
As a main event, the master mandolinist David Grisman takes the stage with his quintet. His genre-defying music is almost equal parts bluegrass and jazz—which led Grisman himself to start referring to it as “dawg” music. In 1975, he founded the first of many quartets and quintets that have had a profound influence on acoustic music and launched a number of careers. The band has recorded with musicians as diverse as Jerry Garcia, Bela Fleck, and Stephane Grappelli.
The current David Grisman Quintet includes Grisman on mandolin, Jim Kerwin on bass, George Marsh on percussion, Enrique Coria on guitar, and Matt Eakle on flute.
