Stephen Petronio’s Underland
Sydney Dance Company
Friday, March 2, 2007 - 8:00pm
Saturday, March 3, 2007 - 8:00pm
When Sydney Dance Company mastermind Graeme Murphy took a sabbatical in 2003, he asked New York choreographer Stephen Petronio to take over for a while. The two choreographers had each established their careers and their dance companies about 20 years earlier and admired each other’s work. But they were known for styles that were not necessarily compatible (twisted and unpredictable for Petronio and contemporary but lyrical for Murphy).
The result of this fusion of styles is the post-apocalyptic vision Underland, a 70-minute evening of edgy dance, wild costumes, and video. The piece is set to a dense and poetic score by the contemporary rock composer Nick Cave. This tour marks the first time American audiences have had the opportunity to see Underland.

Post-performance Q&A follows both performances.
