Question and Answer Session |
Frank Sinatra called Billie Holiday his single greatest musical
influence—and he wasn’t alone; no less than Sarah Vaughan, Anita
O’Day and Dinah Washington, and countless others, claim “Lady Day”
as a formative influence. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
jazz icon’s birth (April 7, 1915), pianist Lara Downes remembers Holiday
with solo transcriptions of songs Lady Day made famous, including
“God Bless the Child,” “I Cover the Waterfront,” “Strange Fruit,” “Solitude”
and “But Beautiful.” Solo piano transcriptions by Jed Distler.
