The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level. This unique professional training (and the full tuition scholarships provided to all of its students) has enabled Curtis alumni like Lang Lang, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein and others to assume prominent positions in America’s leading orchestras as well as ensembles around the world. One of the fruits of the focus on performance is the Curtis Chamber Orchestra. Already a fixture in Curtis’s home town, Philadelphia, the ensemble draws its members from the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, which has been praised for its “otherworldly ensemble and professional level of sophistication” (The New York Times). Conductor Robert Spano leads the ensemble in a program that includes masterpieces by Mozart and Prokofiev, a new viola concerto by Curtis alumnus and Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon, performed by soloist (and Curtis president) Roberto Díaz; and a new vocal composition by Spano.
