MacArthur “Genius,” blogger and Musical America’s 2014 Instrumentalist of the Year, pianist Jeremy Denk has established himself as one of America’s most thought-provoking and compelling artists. In his previous appearance at the Mondavi Center, Denk accompanied legendary violinist Joshua Bell. This time Denk, whose performance The New York Times described as “bracing, effortlessly virtuosic and utterly joyous,” returns for his first solo recital. The program includes a new Music Accord commission, “Sonata,” by composer and pianist Brad Mehldau, “one of the most consistently fascinating voices in current jazz” (JazzTimes). (Mehldau also makes an appearance in the 2014-15 season with his acclaimed trio, pg. 37.) Denk will perform the Brahms-inspired work along with works by Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart and Schumann.
