In his novel Fury, Salman Rushdie refers to the long, hot days of New York
in 1998 as “that Buena Vista summer.” That summer was when Buena Vista
Social Club’s self-titled album took off and threaded its romantic impulses
and uninhibited exuberance into the daily lives of millions of music lovers.
Now Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club says “adios” to audiences around the
world with their farewell tour, which will end, fittingly, in Havana in the fall
of 2015. At the forefront of the group are original band members who will
be fondly recognized from the Buena Vista Social Club film: bandleader and
trombonist Jesús “Aguaje” Ramos, trumpeter Guajiro Mirabal, laúd virtuoso
Barbarito Torres, vocalist and guitarist Eliades Ochoa and the incomparable
vocalist Omara Portuondo.
This event is preceded by a Free Corin Courtyard Concert.
