Saxophonist Maceo Parker embodies the legacy of soul and funk music like no other musician can. Parker has been a common thread in the history of funk—helping to pioneer the sound of the genre in collaborations alongside seminal icons like James Brown, George Clinton, and Prince, all the while honing his own signature brand of showmanship. In this only-at-Mondavi Center double-bill, we dig into the gospel roots of funk with The Jones Family Singers. Consisting in part of five sisters, two brothers and their father, the Texas-based gospel powerhouse are modern practitioners of a long musical tradition, infusing joyful and reverent songs with vintage soul, funk and R&B.
The three-generation gospel collective's high-energy performances are the living embodiment of the indelible connection between the black church and its rock & soul offspring.
Maceo Parker is a funk titan...must be regarded as simply one of the all-time great saxophonists.
