The Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition (YAC), now in its 14th year, supports young artists in the early stages of their careers, providing scholarships to further their musical studies as well as valuable performance opportunities to encourage their artistic growth. This year the competition features the Founders Prize in Vocals to U.S.-residents ages 18–22, and the Young Artists Prize to California-resident pianists and instrumentalists ages 12–17.
In honor of the Centennial of the birth of American composer Leonard Bernstein, the 2018 competition will focus on the American Song repertoire, in partnership with the Hampsong Foundation Song of America project and Leonard Bernstein at 100. American baritone Thomas Hampson will serve as Honorary Chairman of the Competition.
The weekend-long finals celebration includes three events:
April 27: Finalists Showcase
The Young Artists Competition weekend kicks off with a very special opportunity to meet the 2018 Founders' Division finalists: eight of the most promising young American singers today, selected through nationwide live auditions under the guidance of international opera star Thomas Hampson, who serves as honorary chair of the competition.
The eight finalists will perform in a curated showcase and masterclass led by San Francisco Opera Center director Sherri Greenawald, singing repertoire chosen from the Hampsong Foundation Song of America project.
April 28: Competition Finals
Twenty-two talented young singers, pianists and instrumentalists from across the United States take the stage before an internationally renowned panel of judges to compete for cash scholarships and a spot in the Young Artists Competition Winners Concert. This year the competition focuses on repertoire by American composers, in honor of the Centennial of the birth of Leonard Bernstein.
April 29: Winners Concert
Lara Downes hosts the celebratory concert featuring the newly-announced laureates of the 14th annual Mondavi Center Young Artists Competition. The competition, held by live auditions in cities throughout the U.S., is juried by a panel of internationally renowned musicians, with winners in multiple instrumental categories. This year legendary American baritone Thomas Hampson serves as Honorary Chair of the competition, which celebrates the Centennial of the birth of Leonard Bernstein with a focus on music by American composers.
The Young Artists Competiton is sold as a three-event package with general admission seating. Please note that the same ticket is used for entrance to all three days of the Young Artists Competition.
