Dahlak Brathwaite

Friday, January 22, 2021 - 7:30pm
Saturday, January 23, 2021 - 7:30pm

In Spiritrials, addiction, religion and the law intersect in a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program. A timely exploration of the American criminal justice system, this multi-dimensional play blurs the line between hip-hop and dramatic performance. Dahlak Brathwaite (writer/performer) weaves through the autobiographical and the fictional, music and monologue, to examine his place in what appears to be a cultural rite of passage as a young Black male. A UC Davis graduate, Brathwaite launched into the national spoken word scene by winning the Brave New Voices international poetry slam. He has been featured on media outlets such as Upworthy, 2DopeBoyz, and Pitchfork. He has appeared on the Tavis Smiley Radio show, various NPR member stations, and the last two seasons of HBO’s Russell Simmons’ presents Def Poetry Jam.

Spiritrials contains strong language and mature content that may not be appropriate for all audiences.
