For this highly anticipated Mondavi Center return, the SFJAZZ Collective’s focus will be on the iconic singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, whose albums from the mid-1970s famously featured jazz artists like Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock and a collaboration with Charles Mingus. Founded by SFJAZZ in 2004, the Collective is a leaderless group and a democratic composer’s workshop that represents what’s happening now in jazz. The Collective’s mission each year is to perform fresh arrangements of works by a modern master and newly commissioned pieces by each Collective member.
