Spain’s Las Migas Transcends Boundaries and Borders
Las Migas’ powerfully expressive reimagining of flamenco has earned them worldwide fame as flamencas — strong female interpreters of the iconic art form rooted in southern Spain.
The band’s current lineup — featuring Paula Ramírez (Seville, vocals), founder Marta Robles (Seville, composer, guitars and vocals), Alicia Grillo (Córdoba, guitars and vocals) and Laura Pacios (Zamora province, violin) — bring their blazing instrumentalism and passionate vocals to Jackson Hall on November 14.
Las Migas, whose name references the rustic Spanish bread dish, has been defined by musical exploration from the very beginning. The quartet formed in 2004, after three students who had met at Barcelona’s Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya performed music rooted in Spanish traditions. The original members each had culturally diverse backgrounds, as did subsequent musicians. Over the course of six albums, Las Migas’ brand of crossover flamenco has fused pop, folk and Latin rhythms, among other traditional genres, with themes of female empowerment. They have collaborated with leading artists such as Estrella Morente, Viva Suecia, Rozalén, El Kanka, Kevin Johansen, Tomatito, Miguel Poveda, Raül Refree and Josemi Carmona.
We are Rumberas, we are Flamencas, we are free, we are warriors and we are everything we want to be. Marta Robles, Las Migas, in an interview with Alhambra Guitarras
The band has performed in more than 50 countries, and been nominated four times in the Latin Grammys’ Best Flamenco Music Album, winning for Libres (2022) and Flamencas. Released in spring of 2025, Flamencas pays tribute to the essence of flamenco, but with a contemporary expression and aesthetic showcased in the video for the first single, “Celos,” directed by renowned fashion photographer Javier Biosca. This expression carries over to their Instagram account, where 1 million followers can find a vibrant mix of performance clips, band selfies, show announcements and behind-the-scenes content.
