Music from the Sole
House Is Open, Going Dark
Jackson Hall

Blurring the lines between concert, dance and music performance, Music from the Sole is a vibrant tap and live music ensemble celebrating tap’s roots in the African diaspora.

Co-founded by Brazilian tap dancer and choreographer Leonardo Sandoval and American bassist and composer Gregory Richardson, the ensemble blends African American vernacular dance, particularly tap, with live music drawn from jazz, funk, Afro-Brazilian rhythms, house, soul, rock and Afro-Cuban traditions. The result is rhythmically intricate, joyfully expressive performance that honors cultural lineage while pushing creative boundaries.

House Is Open, Going Dark is inspired by the relationships artists create when working and living together, revealing both their tensions and their triumphs. As the piece unfolds, dancers take up instruments and musicians join the choreography, until everyone onstage exists simply as part of a shared, dynamic ensemble.
